There are only a few names in fashion that carry as much influence as Dior, even fewer that have shaped the industry as profoundly. When Christian Dior launched his first collection in Paris in 1947, it didn’t just mark the start of a new fashion house, but it changed the way women dressed around the world. It was a statement when Dior returned fashion with structure, femininity and softness, what would soon be called the ‘New Look’. The silhouette consisted of a cinched waist, rounded shoulders and a full skirt. It wasn’t just new, it was revolutionary, completely different to anything else at the time. Within the same year, he introduced the ‘Miss Dior’ perfume and laid the foundation for what would become one of the world’s most important fashion brands. The ‘Bar Jacket’ that was first seen in 1947’s collection, remains a symbol of the house till today.
After Dior’s sudden death in 1957, the brand’s legacy was carried forward by a series of creative talents. Yves Saint Laurent brought a younger style with his 1958 ‘Trapeze’ collection. Alongside Marc Bohan who led the brand through the 60s and 70s with elegant designs. Furthermore came Gianfranco Ferré in the late 80s to add a more structured feel. In 1997, the famous John Galliano became Dior’s creative director. Known for his theatrical shows and bold ideas, Galliano pushed Dior intro a new era of fashion. He introduced the ‘Saddle Bag’ in 1999, an accessory that quickly became a pop culture icon and remains popular today. Moreover, his runway collections such as the ‘Egyptian’ and ‘Madame Butterfly’ are still remembered due to their impact and artistry. To add, Raf Simmons joined in 2012, bringing a modern and minimalistic vision. His clean shapes and thoughtful tailoring offered a fresh take on Dior’s classic styles. 2016 remarked Maria Grazia Chiuri becoming the first woman to lead the Dior house. She brought a powerful and thoughtful voice to the atelier, through combining beauty with meaning. She introduced a “We Should All be Feminists” t-shirt that made headlines, whilst her updated versions of the ‘Book Tote’ and ‘Lady Dior’ have become essential for collectors today.
